The past two days, I’ve been slowly scratching out what my year is going to look like. I know that I will be teaching the full year with INBs – interactive notebooks – for the first time. This is a big commitment. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do and while I’ve been using foldables here and there, I want to continue building independence, confidence and metacognition in my kids.
I am really thankful to how well my first year of teaching Grade 11 math went. It would not have gone so smoothly without Math-Help-Services.com, which the board paid for. It also helped that I was using ‘backwards planning’ to create a timeline and managed to follow it fairly well.
But I know I’m still sloppy with planning, and despite dropping many pretty pennies on Planbook by Hellmansoft, I still manage not to use it by the end of the year. I learned a lot of lessons and have plans on how to make things better next year.
And seeing that I’ve finally completed my summer course, I will soon be certified to teach high school math in Ontario! Of course, my extremely opinionated and oversharing brain won’t stop running … ideas are constantly popping in my head and my passion is on high gear. There is no end of ideas on how to feed Pythagorean Theorem to unengaged and resistant Aboriginal children.
I spent most of the evening watching terrible math videos on YouTube, including a rap on graphing based off a Macklemore tune, as well as throwing down a rough draft of my long-range plans on Padlet (ohhhh, Padlet I will never stop loving you). I even went so far as to make a new Twitter account – I swore this off many years ago – with a bad, punny handle, @asineofmadness, because I felt left out seeing that so many math teachers Tweet and discuss great ideas on the Interwebs. But, I’m going off on a tangent …
My point is, I am ready to get back to work.
Soon. I still have some chores to do, a patio party to throw and maybe an Ashtanga class to take. I couldn’t have imagined myself to be in a better place than where I am, right here and right now.
So goodnight all and best to make the last 4 days I have in Toronto!
